This is the public privacy policy for Hum, the on-device voice notes app for iPhone and iPad. The same text is in the app under Settings → Privacy.
Hum records audio, transcribes it entirely on this device (using Apple's on-device speech engine or a locally-running Whisper model), and stores everything in this app's sandbox. Hum has no servers — audio is not uploaded to Hum, to OpenAI, or to anyone else.
Your recordings are included in your device's own encrypted backup, so a lost or replaced device doesn't lose them. That backup belongs to you and is managed by iOS — Hum never sees it.
Hum downloads its on-device model files from public CDNs on first use: the Whisper transcription model (and any model you switch to in Settings), and — for multi-speaker recordings — the speaker-separation model. If you use the advanced on-device Minutes option, Hum also downloads that larger model (about 2 GB). Apple Intelligence downloads its own model, managed by iOS. These transfers contain only model weights — never your audio, your transcripts, or any identifiers. Once downloaded, everything runs locally on this device.
Hum collects no usage data, no crash reports, no event logs, no device identifiers. We do not know how often you record, when you record, or what you record. Hum's developer operates no servers that receive anything from you.
Hum has no sign-in, no profile, no account system. You don't tell us your name. You don't tell us your email. You don't tell us anything.
Minutes and chat run on this device — using Apple Intelligence where it's available, or Hum's own downloadable model on devices with enough memory. The transcript text is processed locally and the result is returned to Hum. Nothing leaves the device.
On devices that can't run them, these features say so — they are never silently routed to a cloud service.
Hum asks for microphone access on first launch. iOS shows the standard permission prompt. If you decline, Hum cannot record — there is no fallback. Audio captured via the microphone is written to local storage only.
Hum uses Apple's StoreKit for the subscription. Apple processes the payment and manages renewals — cancel anytime in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. Hum never sees your card details, billing address, or Apple ID.
Audio recordings (.caf and .m4a files), transcripts, summaries, folders, and embeddings used for search. Everything lives in the app's sandbox. Uninstalling Hum deletes all of it.
When you tap Share or Export, you choose what leaves the device. Markdown files, plain text, Obsidian links, and Drafts links are sent to the destination you pick. We do not send copies anywhere.
Hum transcribes and summarises automatically. It is not perfect. Accuracy depends entirely on the audio: distance from the microphone, background noise, music, accents, people talking over each other, and recording quality all affect the result. Transcripts, Minutes, and chat answers may contain errors, misheard words, or missing content.
Hum is provided "as is," with no warranty of accuracy or fitness for any purpose. Do not treat its output as a definitive, complete, or legal record. For anything that matters, check it against the original audio — your recording is always kept. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Hum and its developer accept no liability for any loss, damage, or decision arising from errors, inaccuracies, missing content, or reliance on anything Hum produces.
You are responsible for how you use Hum. Laws on recording conversations and meetings differ by country and region — some require the consent of everyone being recorded. It is your responsibility to know and follow the law where you are, and to obtain any consent required before you record. Hum and its developer are not responsible for the recordings you choose to make.
Hum is suitable for any age. No data collection means no special children's policy is required.
If this policy changes, the new version will appear here and in the app in the next update, and the change will be summarised in the App Store "What's New" notes.
